Les Mystères de l'Ouest (The Wild Wild West) est une série télévisée américaine, en 104 épisodes de 50 minutes, dont 28 en noir et blanc, créée par Michael Garrison et diffusée entre le 17 septembre 1965 et le 4 avril 1969 sur le réseau CBS. En France, la série a été diffusée à partir du 9 avril 1967 sur la deuxième chaîne de l'ORTF.

Synopsis [modifier]
Cette série met en scène les aventures de deux agents des United States Secret Service, au service du président Ulysses S. Grant, James T. West, homme d'action, et Artemus Gordon, as du déguisement et des inventions anachroniques. Se déplaçant tantôt à cheval, tantôt dans leur luxueux train privé, ils affrontent des adversaires hors du commun (Docteur Miguelito Loveless, entre autres) dans tout l'Ouest américain.

Commentaires [modifier]
La série a marqué de nombreuses générations, et a encore quelque succès de nos jours: la série marie les scènes de combats convenues mais spectaculaires, un sens de l'humour souvent mordant, des inventions toujours farfelues et anachroniques, ainsi que des effets spéciaux préhistoriques qui donnent à l'ensemble une allure décidement kitsch mais toujours agréable à voir ou revoir. James West (Robert Conrad) y joue le rôle de l'homme d'action du duo, toujours tiré à quatre épingles et sûr de lui, aucune situation ne lui fait peur et ne lui résiste dans le far-west des années 1860-70; Artemus Gordon (Ross Martin) est plus cérébral, il a toujours une de ses inventions sur lui, et n'hésite pas à s'affubler de déguisements ridicules pour la bonne cause. De cette relation, le film "Wild Wild West" (1999) développera le contenu décrit de façon ambigüe par la série des années 60 sur l'homosexualité latente entre les deux protagonistes de l'aventure.
L'arrêt de la série est dû à la crainte de CBS de la violence considérée comme "excessive" plutôt que dû au déclin du taux d'audience.
